A friend recently referred to the starts and stops of our writing life as the “times and tides,” and emphasized that each of us has different tide tables.
It’s true. I’m ready to pick up the threads of a revision this week. Another friend has finished the final copy editing of her most recent non-fiction and, while tying up loose threads, is enjoying the holidays and casually (intently!) trolling for her next topic. A new novelist I know is going through his mss yet again, trying to tighten the tension and get it ready to submit to an agent. Another friend is trying to recuperate from a long illness and hospital stay and is working on picturebooks when she feels strong enough.
Anastasia Suen has a great posting about taking short, frequent breaks.
So–enjoy the season. Take a break. Honor your own tide table.
Me? My break is over and I’m ready to tackle that revision! I’m excited to sit down to work today.

I love this analogy! Time and tides…yes, it’s all ebb and flow!
