composting ideas

How long does it take for a story idea to bear fruit?  Yesterday, I got a new insight into an old story.  Why didn’t I see it before?  Why does it take so long for an idea to mature?

What’s the longest time you’ve spent on one idea?

What’s the shortest time?

  1. So far, the longest has been 12 years.

But I have a few still fermenting. :-)

  2. Don’t you love the metaphors we use for ideas that haunt us for years? Compost, ferment, haunt. What else? In the womb.

12 years sounds about right to me. OTOH, I’ve had a few go very fast. I guess they came fully formed.
