How do you, as a writer, go through the holidays? Thanksgiving on Thursday is a major holiday for our family.
For me, I don’t get to actually write. This week, all three of my daughters are coming home and we’ll have 16 for Thanksgiving dinner. Or more. The number seems to go up daily. So, I need to clean and cook.
But I’m also writing. The writing process involves watching and listening as people interact, making mental notes about dialogue. Or actually writing down everything someone says. It’s OK to have a notebook handy and make notes, because you’re a writer. I notice all those wonderful sensory details of smell, taste, touch, sight, sounds.
(For great smells, try Aromatique candles, made here in AR. We love the Evergreen-Orange, Cinnamon Cider and Pumpkin Spice.)
Here’s a couple things to try:
- Dialogue: Follow one conversation and jot down everything that’s said. Or follow one person and jot down everything that person says.
- Sensory details: Notice as many details as possible during one holiday event. Immediately after, write about it using all five senses.
- Talk about literature: Share your favorite books with friends and family and find out their favorites.
