Rough draft of Declaration

In honor of Independence Day, I’m posting this link to Thomas Jefferson’s “rough draught” of the Declaration of Independence. You can download the jpeg, blow it up and see where Jefferson had to re-envision the words of this stirring document.

Here is a transcript of the text.

For example:

“We hold these truths to be self-evident;”

was revised  to this:

“We hold these truths to be sacred and undeniable;”
