Revision metaphor

Sara Holmes blog talks about the work of an artist named Claudia Tennyson, who repairs cracked pottery by gilding the cracks. Instead, of letting the pottery go to the trash heap, artists deliberately emphasis the cracks by filling them with gold: the repairs increase the value. Sara suggests that it’s an apt metaphor: when we revise our writing, we are Gilding the Cracks . Isn’t that lovely?

Ever have one of those lousy weeks when the writing seems to be going badly and no one around you seems to understand your struggles? Other writers are have those weeks, too. Years? Revising is often a thankless, prolonged struggle, she says with a wry note of experience. Think of one writer friend who is struggling to finish their revision marathon and send a note of encouragement today.
