My first textbook was published and sold well, then my publisher was acquired by a much bigger house that failed to push it aggressively. Someone apparently "gave" or allowed an Indian publisher to produce and sell "imprints" of my book, but I have never seen a penny of the royalties from the Indian version. It has my name as author but a new ISBN. It has even been reprinted. How can I collect for my just due?

[...] I checked with a few resources and there is no hard and fast legal rule concerning “next book” provisions in contracts. In his article, “Next Book” Provisions in Publishing Contracts, Ivan Hoffman explains the issues and offers advice for negotiating with publishers. You will find more valuable information at Darcy Pattison’s Book Contract Essentials page. [...]

Super post - contracts can be really complicated, and they are all different! Another brilliant and invaluable book for getting to grips with the whole process is Literary Agent Carole Blake's 'From Pitch to Publication'
If you don't have an agent, the key is to ask for help and as you so rightly say, don't rush into anything!
