Hi Joelle, Glad you posted this URL on our list. Your article is helpful and encouraging (believe it or not!). I especially appreciate the 7 ways to keep the dream alive. It’s so important to do all of those things. One thing I keep promising to do is start a website.

Hi Joelle,
Thanks so much for sharing this. It puts the whole thing in perspective. I sold one nonfiction book without an agent. It took me six years to write it,two years to find a publisher, and a year-and-a-half to hit the bookstores. Now I’m looking for the right agent to rep my children’s books. I thought for sure an agent could get my stuff sold with lightning speed–and maybe one can, but I’ve got to secure one first. It has been a long road finding one, I’ll tell you that, but your post gives me new energy.

GREAT post, Joelle! I can so relate – I’ve been about 16 years, too – more more! I had some publications along the way and LOTS of stumbles and getting orphaned and you-name-it – it has happened to me.

But there is always hope. I was seriously considering that my *tiny* career was over when I lost my agent two years ago and went 8 years without any sign of hope or encouragement. And then I got my 1# choice in agent and a month later she sold a 3 book deal for me to Scholastic. I’m still delirious with excitement! The first book (all stand alone novels) comes out next summer, too!
